Last month, I visited Refinery 29’s new exhibit at The Palace of Fine Arts, called 29 Rooms. It was so interesting, and creative, and imaginative. I absolutely loved it! What I hadn’t realized before I got there is that the exhibit was essentially about the art of the selfie, and the advent of phones and cameras.
As you can see from the pictures, this was a big, interactive art exhibit. I was so blown away by how everything was put together, and definitely feel lucky to have snagged tickets to one of the three sessions they held. Each of the – you guessed it – 29 rooms, is a collaboration between Refinery 29 and an individual or entity (Planned Parenthood, Women’s March, Anna Kendrick, Janelle Monae, and Demi Lovato to name a few).
They covered everything from “healing” art, to LGBTQIA art, to erotic art, the aforementioned Women’s March and Demi Lovato tattoos. They all gave off some kind of powerful message, and allowed us to interact with the exhibits ourselves. My favorite room was for an upcoming movie called A Simple Favor, which centers around Stephanie (Anna Kendrick), a mommy vlogger who seeks to uncover the truth behind her best friend Emily’s (Blake Lively) sudden disappearance from their small town. We all have secrets and dark sides, so in this exhibit, people could write a secret on a piece of paper and roll it into a metal screen. You then could go through and randomly pull out somebody’s secret…my favorite one was the one pictured above, but they were all very interesting.
These next two pictures were very interesting – as you stood in front of the mirror, words quickly flicked onto the screen. The only way you could figure out what the statement said was by taking a picture of the image and capturing the words. We had many phrases, but this one stood out! The bottom photo was a hanging image that changed as it turned. It became twins on both sides; also very cool!
If 29 Rooms comes around again, especially in the Bay Area, I’d highly recommend giving it a look. For all the cool, unique things to do in San Francisco, this may have topped the list!
