Market by Rooted

IG users, please see the link in my bio for the full blog.

Have you checked out the Market by Rooted next to Larkey Park? It used to be a deli but their refrigeration went out and the people who own Rooted bought it. Speaking of, you may remember that Rooted Coffee is owned by a Las Lomas alumnus named Jon Gilmore.

Jon and his wife, Jenny, started Rooted and focus on making a difference in the local and global farming communities. For example, they donate 10% of profits to local and global charities. They source organic and fairly-traded coffee beans, only use plant-based milks, and only use compostable, petroleum-free cups.

Based on their menu, it seems The Market by Rooted is following the same plan. It has been open for about three months and I enjoyed what I ate while visiting recently. They have sandwiches, many vegan items, and other various healthy snacks. They also have two coffee shop locations in both Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill, which have some good options, but mostly coffee. Check out our past coverage on Rooted here.

I want to congratulate them on their success, as I remember when they started by selling coffee at the Walnut Creek Farmers Market, along with their wonderful vegan waffles! They were looking for a building and got rejected for the library location, but persevered with two better locations. For guilt-free and healthy eating, check out The Market by Rooted next time you’re in the Larkey Park area.

New coffee shop just opened!

It looks like a new coffee shop just opened in downtown Walnut Creek! Good for them for opening during a lockdown, when so much is up in the air. I truly hope they do well! I saw their sign up in the Schroeder Insurance building a few weeks ago, but they hadn’t yet opened. I hav always admired this brick building it has such a cool architectural vibe, with the faux metal panels at the front entrance to the color of the bricks and now it is open for all to enjoy.

Now, according to their website and their Instagram, they are officially open for business, though at limited hours due to the pandemic (I’m guessing). The menu looks fantastic, and I really can’t wait to walk over and give it a try. Tellus Coffee is all about the healthy, good vibes. I mean, check out that plant wall!

That reminds me a lot of Rooted Coffee, which I’ve blogged about before. They found a brick-and-mortar home in Pleasant Hill after years at the Farmer’s Market. It seems like Tellus Coffee also has a ton of potential. Their menu includes everything from coffee to avocado toast to empanadas.

Here’s to hoping that COVID ends soon and we can all give Tellus a try indoors! For now it might just be grab and go. I know I’ll be placing a to-go order and visiting with my mask in the near future. I always love seeing what a new neighborhood coffee shop can offer our community!

Rooted Coffee’s roots in WC

Rooted Coffee, which has been serving the Walnut Creek Farmer’s Market for years, has found a home in Pleasant Hill on Oak Park. They’re known for their paleo waffle and they now have a bunch of vegan and gluten-free items, too!

The owner of Rooted, Jon Gilmore, is a Las Lomas High graduate who says on the website that he’s wanted to open a coffee shop since graduating college. He and his wife, Jenny, focus on making a difference with their business both in the local community and in the global farming community.

One cool thing they do is a promise to donate 10% of profits to local and global charities. They source beans that are organic and fairly traded, only use plant-based milks, exclusively use compostable and petroleum-free cups, and keep a relationship with one independent, local roaster. Very cool!

I think the coffee itself is good, but I really love the paleo waffle and their food menu; though it’s not extensive, it has some awesome items on it. I highly recommend checking out Rooted when you get a chance! I also miss them at the Farmer’s Market, but wish them nothing but success at their new brick and mortar location – it has been a long time coming.
